Copy of a letter from HM Minister for Foreign Affairs, George Canning, to the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Persia [Iran], Mirza Abul Hassan Khan [Mirza Abu'l-Hasan Khan Shirazi], of 27 July 1826. The letter is in reply to Mirza Abul Hassan Khan’s letter announcing the bestowal of the Order of the Lion and the Sun upon HM Chargé d’Affaires to Persia, Henry Willock, by the Shah of Persia (see IOR/L/PS/9/70/121). Canning indicates that he has acquainted the King of the United Kingdom with the Shah’s bestowal of the award, and that the King is pleased to permit Willock to accept it.
This document was originally enclosed, as the second enclosure to enclosure No. 1, in Willock’s letter to the Secret Committee Pre-1784, the Committee responsible for protecting East India Company shipping. Post-1784, its main role was to transmit communications between the Board of Control and the Company's Indian governments on matters requiring secrecy. of the East India Company of 6 January 1827 (IOR/L/PS/9/70/168).
