Government were also offered in return for the acceptance
of our frontier, either some percentage of shares in
the company or a part of the royalties to be paid to
the Iraq Government* They refused to discuss this
on the ground that they wanted the Mosul Vilayet to xetirn
to Turkey as well* Equally after full consideratioi
of all Italy's claims for compensation in the Near
East arising from war and frontier treaties, it was
considered advisable to offer Italy some share in the
Company if and whan the Mosul question was settled
in our favour. It is understood that the Company
will admit such Turkish and Italian participation
if absolutely necessary by a proportional reduction
of the shares of the present four participants.
The Colonial Office also have in mind, if neces
sary, to circumvent the monopolistic character of the
Company's concession by arranging with the Iraq
Government to tell the Turkish Petroleum Comoany
that they must choose the areas in which they will
work,and any areas not exploited in a certain number
of years will then be free for other concessionary
companies or/sbme other similar of the
monopolistic character of the concession.
