The item consists of copies and extracts of correspondence and minutes cited in, or enclosed with, a Political Letter from the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. The item relates to instructions given to Captain Lowe, Commanding the Indian Naval Squadron in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. , by Major Samuel Hennell, Resident in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. , as a consequence of the ‘disturbed state’ of the lower Persian [Iranian] coast of the Gulf. Hennell’s initial instructions are to protect vessels sailing from Congoon [Kangan], and to inspect and potentially seize vessels belonging to Mogoo [Moghuyeh], Charrack [Bandar-e Charak], and Asseeloo [Bandar-e ‘Asaluyeh]. These instructions are modified a few months later.

As well as Lowe, copies of the instructions are sent to: Lieutenant-Colonel Justin Sheil, Her Majesty’s Minister Plenipotentiary and Envoy Extraordinary A diplomatic representative who ranks below an ambassador.
