22-9-15
The General Officer Commanding, Force “D,” reported that he had despatched a further consignment of
captured rifles and ammunition to Bombay.
Sir Mark Sykes arrived at General Headquarters, with Sir P. Cox.
The General Officer Commanding, Force “D,” was informed that two launches bad been sent on the
“Umeta” (Sailed 19th).
A report, drawn up by Bieutenant Stoddard, was received from the General Officer Commanding,
Force “D. 5 ’ The latter recommended that a scheme for the reclamation of a part of the flood area
west of Gurmat Ali should be considered, and that Sir W. Willcocks’ opinion on the subject should
be asked. He submitted that a large irrigation project would have a good effect on the country.
The Secretary of State informed the Viceroy that the Admiralty advised caution with regard to dredging
in the Shatt and at the bar, and he stated that it would be advisable before commencing work to
obtain the advice of Buchanan.
The Secretary of State was informed, in continuation of intimation that no despatches regarding
Force “D’* were being published, that the last despatch published was regarding operations up to the
14th April.
The Secretary of State was informed that certain motor cars, etc., were available in India and might
be purchased by the War Office for the use of the frontier flight. Some of them had been originally
ordered for the flight in Mesopotamia.
The Deputy Director, Medical Services, Force “D,” asked whether a hospital ship light enough to
cross the bar could not be sent to Force “D,” as the ship used for taking patients across the bar was
required as a dep 6 t ship.
The General Officer Commanding, Force “D,” asked for more British officers for the 33rd Cavalry.
The Deputy Director, Ordnance Supply, Force “D,” asked for 1,000 Wheatly flares.
The Director, Boyal Indian Marine, enquired whether he was still to keep shipping for 855 British
troops for Basrah, and in reply was told that now only 400 were to go, 100 of whom would sail
about 15th—17th October.
