It will thus be seen that a certain number of extra Indian drivers are
always present with these batteries.
To keep them efficient, for the purpose of discipline, and in order to give
the extra men a normal chance of promotion, I recommend that the following
sliding scale of Indian non-commissioned officers for each battery be sanc
tioned :—

With reference to your No. 823-18-A {Dy. No. S.-22220), dated 3rd
September 1915, I am directed to inform you that, with a view to allowing an
increased proportion of Indian non-commissioned officers for the Indian ranks
with the Hoyal Horse and Royal Field Artillery in Force “ D, ” three Havil-
dars and five Naiks, supernumerary to the establishment of Royal Artillery
Dep6ts, will be despatched by the convoy sailing about the middle of October.
This will allow an additional Naik per battery apd approximately 1 Havil
dar per 2 batteries.
