Mesopotamia.—Tigris Line.—Reconnaissance in force on both banks of Tigris on 27th September drew
fire from enemy's guns which were located by our artillery. General Fry's brigade advanced on left
bank and made good and entrenched position within 3,500 yards of enemy's left centre.
On night of 27th-28th September our troops were to move into positions preparatory to attacking at dawn
on 28th September. Telegraphic communication has been temporarily interrupted by raiding party
of Turkish and Arab cavalry up stream of Shaikh Saad and has therefore been replaced by wireless.
Luring reconnaissance on 27th September our cavalry captured 1 officer and 35 men on left bank.

The usual weekly batch of documents was received from the Intelligence Section of the General Staff,
Force “D” (List only printed).
( N. B. —This week no weekly distribution statement of Force “ D ” was received by post.)
The telegram from General Nixon, pointing out the urgent need of river craft being rapidly provided,
was repeated to the Secretary of State.
The General Officer Commanding, Force “ D,’* reported a successful action at Sinn near Kut-al-Amarah
on the 2 8 th.

In continuation of this report the General Officer Commanding, Force “ D reported that General
Delamain’s Column had encountered a reinforcing column of the enemy, and had routed it.
The General Officer Commanding, Egypt, and the Officer Commanding, Aden, were informed of the victory
at Kut-al-Amarah
The Secretary of State informed the Viceroy that the arrangements with the Eastern Bank for opening
a branch at Basrah had been concluded.
The General Officer Commanding, Force ‘ 6 D,” was informed that 100 hand grenades and 51 high explo
sive bombs had been shipped on the “Taroba.”

- Conversations between Sir Percy Zachariah Cox, Political Resident A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency. in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. , and the Shaikh of Muhammareh [Khorramshahr] with regards to negotiating with leaders of the Bakhtiari [Bakhtīyārī] tribal confederation to protect the oil fields and ‘maintain order’ in Arabistan [Khuzestan]
- The rejection of Turkish forces from Najaf [An-Najaf] by the local population
- Discussions about how to govern holy places between the Basrah [Basra] Vilayet [a province under the Ottoman Empire] and Baghdad in anticipation of them coming under British control, and the extent to which the Persian Government should be consulted on this matter.

- The Quartermaster General’s Embarkation Statement, listing reinforcements and details for Force D which embarked at Bombay [Mumbai] and Karachi (ff 128-134).
The vast majority of material in the volume dates from September 1915, with the exception of a small amount of material which dates from May, June and August 1915.
