The increased demand for private freight is considered to be mainly due to
the late regularity of the communication; but it seems doubtful to the Super
intendent of the Flotilla whether the reduction in the scale of charges for
freight in June in the past year has sensibly enhanced the demand for it.
The amount realized during the year for services rendered by the Port
Department at Kurrachee for swinging Moorings in
the Harbour and for towage of Merchant vessels,
has been Rs. 22,600, against Rs. 16,980 of the year previous.
A collision, owing to defective moorings, between the ships “ Nouveau
Luminy ” and “ Maria,” is the only accident that has occurred within the Port.
In April last the excise duty on Salt was raised from one Rupee to
Salt. Rs. 1-4-0 per maund.
Realizations from this source in 1860-61 are shown to be Rs. 42,984
against Rs. 13,918 in 1859-60, being an increase of Rs. 29,066.
