The item consists of an India Board [ Board of Control Formally known as the Board of Commissioners for the Affairs of India, it was established by an Act of Parliament in 1784 to supervise the activities of the East India Company. ] memorandum relating to Persia [Iran] and concerning the contents of a dispatch from Claudius James Rich, Resident at Bagdad [Baghdad], to the Chairman of the Court of Directors The London-based directors of the East India Company who dealt with the daily conduct of the Company's affairs. (dated 10 June 1817). The memorandum discusses the danger to British interests in Persia and the threat to its territories in India because of Russian diplomatic and political efforts there, as well as the employment of French officers in the Persian Army. Rich’s recommendations to counteract these influences are also discussed.
