Chiefs of the Southern Maratha Country during the year was
favourable. There was some progress in Public Works, among
which may be mentioned the completion of a metalled road
from the town of San glee to the Sattara frontier, a distance
of six miles, a fine school-house at Meeruj, and two dhurum-
salas at Moodhole. Education is being gradually diffuseds
among the dependents of the
Sirdars

tion of most of their estates, after years of chronic embarrass
ment, is marked by well assured prosperity.

5. The inability of the Chiefs of this province to keep
in check the bands of outlaws who traversed the country
under Waghere leaders, plundering His Highness the Gaek-
war’s Mahals, became so evident in the early part of the year
of report that the Resident at Baroda proposed to Govern
ment the formation of a Local Corps, under European
officers, for the preservation of order. While this proposal
was under consideration the state of Okamundel caused con
siderable anxiety, and at one time there was a probability of a
general outbreak of the inhabitants. An additional Regi
ment of Native Infantry was in consequence sent into Katty-
war, one wing being quartered at Dwarka and the other
encamped in the vicinity of the Burda Hills. On the open
