of the Arab coast. Returning to Khateef on the 30th and
finding that there was no answer from the Wahabee Chief,
Captain Pasley sent his boats off to bring out all the Wahabee
vessels that might be in the harbour, and to destroy a small
fort called the Burj Bullif which commanded the entrance of
the port. This service was satisfactorily accomplished. An
attempt was next made to destroy the neighbouring fort of
Demaum. It being past high-water the boats could not
approach it, when their crews gallantly waded on shore and
succeeded in effecting an entrance to the principal tower ; but
finding the garrison much stronger than was anticipated they
were compelled to retreat with the loss of three men killed,
and two officers and three men wounded. On the following
day the fort of Demaum was shelled, and some considerable
damage done to the interior and its defenders.
34. Operations were next directed by the Highflyer
against the pirate port of Soor, the inhabitants of which, chiefly
of the Jenuba tribe, were implicated in the recent plunder and
murder of our subjects. The Jenuba tribe had long been
notorious among our Naval officers as the most cruel and
unscrupulous slavers and pirates, and they were among the
Arab slave dealers who had conspired in 1861 to assassinate
the British Agent at Zanzibar for his anti-slavery proceed
ings. They had treated the demands made on them by
Colonel Pelly for restitution of the property plundered by
them from our subjects with total disregard. Under all these
circumstances Colonel Pelly judged that a severe example
should be made of the Jenuba, and after due warning to
all non-combatants, the Highflyer opened fire on their forts,
utterly ruining them. The Highflyer’s boats then went up
the Sooree creeks and destroyed or confiscated all the craft of
the tribe.
35. Captain Pasley returned to Bombay on the 18th
February for further instructions, while Colonel Pelly re-
