to construct a cofferdam to admit
of the repairs to the gates and
docks being carried out. The dam consists of double rows
of piles planked from inside by jungle planks and four
sets of longitudinal waling connected together with iron
bolts. The whole structure has been strengthened by cross
beams from inside and supported by struts from outside.
The space between the inner planking has been filled in with
stiff puddle brought from the adjacent creeks. On closing
the sluices on the 15th March 1866 the sea forced out some
of the horizontal planks at the bottom. Vertical piles were
then driven flush with the outer waling, and the space
between the planking and the new piles was filled in with
puddle.
The sluices were again shut on the 29th April 1866.
As soon as mud is removed from the lower end of the Dock
the renewal of the traverse plates and the stone pavement,
as also the resetting of the brass sockets which receive the
spindles, will be commenced.
