the port; it is only a matter of regret that with all its faci
lities for landing and shipping goods, Carwar does not yet
show any signs of commercial activity. Coompta, although
it has no claim to a harbour, either natural or artificial, is
still adhered to by the native merchants, who are unwilling
to leave it, although it must be apparent to them that Car-
war would be more advantageous in many ways. The
works under this head of the Harbour Works Estimate
have been stopped, as sufficient has already been done for
the present wants of the place, and it will be time enough
when trade is drawn here to complete the wharf wall to the
length originally intended, viz. 1,800 feet.
250. This road, which connects the Arbyle Ghaut and
Kyga Ghaut roads between Beyt-

intended to be 100 feet wide
throughout, but in consequence of the works being stopped
its general average does not at present exceed 73 feet. In
the Bay at Alliguddy a sea-wall with a slope of one to one
has been built on the sea face, but there still remains a length
of about 350 feet which requires to be properly built to
ensure the safety of the road ; this length was only finished
in a temporary manner. In addition to the above, timber
groynes have been erected at right angles to the sea-wall to
break the force of the sea, and to cause a deposit of sand to

From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. during the financial year 1865-66.
