267. The excavation has been carried on the J 2th mile
np to the end of the 17th mile.
Sukkur and Shadadpoor Canal. Beyond this work has been Stop.
ped for the present pending the
preparation of fresh plans embodying some important modi-
fications lately decided on by Lieutenant-Colonel Fife.
These involve a change in the ulterior course of the canal
from that previously designed and estimated for. In conse
quence of all excavation being confined within five miles of
the line of canal the expenditure during the year has only
amounted to Rs. 87,879. Considerable progress has been
made, however, in the head works. The position of the
regulating bridge has been fixed at about 200 feet out from
the river bank, where there is seldom less than 4 feet of water
at the low season. In this spot a strong cofferdam has been
constructed, and the foundations of two piers and an abut
ment with intermediate paving fixed on solid rock at a depth
of 3 feet below the bed of the river. Iron gates and regula
ting apparatus have been ordered from England. About
200 running feet of the foundations of the river wall to con
nect the present river bank with the bridge have been laid in
the river bed. The Acting Executive Engineer reports that
preparations are being made to enable the works to proceed
during the inundation by raising the dam to a height of 17
feet above the bed of the Indus.
268. Water was admitted to the 74th mile during the
past season, and the canal has
been opened out to the full width
to the end of the 80th mile. It has also been widened
between the 9th and 25th, the 37th and 43rd, the 60th and
63rd, and between the 69th and 74th miles. From the flood
caused by the very heavy rainfall in August 1865 a consi
derable quantity of the spoil bank on the west side was
