Sjr,— I have the honour to inform you that, in accord
ance with the instructions of the Bombay Government
received at Bunder Abbas on the 7th instant, I embarked
on board Her Majesty’s Steamer Amberwitch and proceeded
to Angaum for the purpose of inspecting the island with
reference to the proposed removal ot the Mussendom 1 ole-
graph Station.
2. Accompanied by Mr. Vice-Consul Johnston and
Lieutenant Stiffe, I landed on the morning of the 8th at the
north end opposite the anchorage, and spent the day in liding
and walking over the island.
3. It is a bare rocky islet of oblong shape, about oh
miles in length from north to south, by 3 in breadth, with
scanty patches of cultivation near the north and south ends,
and a few shrubs here and there in the centre. The rock
consists chiefly of hard calcareous sandstone welt adapted
for building purposes, and abundance of lime and gypsum
may be obtained on the island. On the north side the rocks
are rugged and uneven, with peaks from 250 to 350 feet
above the level of the sea. The central and southern poi-
tions of the island form a plateau having an average eleva
tion of about 100 feet. On alow projecting point at the
north end are the ruins of a considerable village now deserted,
