me almost to anticipate the results of my own inspection*
and it was often a matter of wonder to the accompanying
chaoshes how, without having before visited the country,
I was in possession of so many minor details of yet unaccom-
plished stages. Should my opinion on any proposed changes
be found to differ from those expressed by Colonel Kemball,
I would request particular attention to the fact that my in
spection was performed at a most favourable season, that of my
predecessor for a great part during a severe winter, and
under many consequent difficulties. Nor should it be for
gotten that I have had the great advantage of data based
upon a three or four-years’ experience of the line, which was
in its infancy on the occasion of prior inspection.
14. The same officer obtained for me, moreover, the
aid of an Egyptian engineer, deputed by His Excellency
Namik Pacha to accompany me to the limit of his jurisdiction,
Ahmed Effendi, jointly with myself, took notes of the diffi
culties encountered, and proposed amendments, returning to
Bagdad with the recorded result of his observations. I ad
dressed a second report on the subject to Colonel Kemball,
accompanied by a memorandum of route traversed, but have
retained no copy. It is probable that action has already been
taken on these reports, of which the substance is contained
in the enclosed notes on the first section of country. Under
any circumstances, I have to express my acknowledgments
of the service rendered by Ahmed Effendi during our com
panionship of more than three weeks, and should he glad to
send him some small token of appreciation.
15. Mr. Kersting was always ready to assist me with
his valuable professional knowledge, and has favoured me
with memoranda of the result of his observations between
Bagdad and Izmid. These are appended to the diary. We
left Bagdad on the 19th May and reached Angureh on the
