to the imperfect manner in which the gutta-percha-covered
wire is joined on to the line wire outside the office windows.
A fifth instrument is urgently required at Sivas for the Erze-
rum and Frebizurc line.
Section III .—From Sivas to Scutari ; or Sectio?i of
Asia Minor.
A diary as far as Izmid is annexed.
From Sivas to Yusgat, forty-two hours, no change in
the line appears to me absolutely urgent or requisite. I
think it would have been better to have avoided, if possible,
the zigzag which has lengthened it by several miles from
a more direct course, nor did I feel satisfied that every such
variation of the points of the compass was imperative. But
the line seems upon the whole sufficiently secure. One or
two abrupt turns might be avoided with advantage, especially
at about an hour from Kuvneh, where the posts might be re
dressed and strengthened at the angle formed by the change
from W.N.W. to W. For the last hour, or more too, on the
same side of Kuvneh the wires are too slack.
From Yuzgat to Angureh, thirty-nine hours, there is
no part of the line which appears to me so much to require
alteration as the passage along the streets of Yuzgat, than
which nothing can well be more clumsy and ill-contrived.
Broken and ill-supported insulators are not all the defects
which injure communication ; the whole thing is an eyesore.
I should strongly recommend attention to one of two
changes:—
ls£.—To bring the line out of the town by a more direct
course than that now taken.
2nd .—To raise the line from its present low position
among the narrow, irregular streets, and secure it by lofty
and strong poles, where no better support is accidentally
