EXTRACTS FROM A REPORT BY THE LORD
BISHOP OF BOMBAY, dated 30th APRIL 1866.
Clergy.
Total licensed at this time—fifty-five.
2. I am happy to state that the complement of Chaplains
and of Junior Chaplains is at present full, there beino' now on
the list eleven of the former and nineteen of the latter. Four,
however, are absent on furlough or on sick leave; the number
therefore upon duty is twenty-six. This is rather a larger
proportion than I have generally been able to record as on
actual service, and consequently there is no one of the recog
nised stations which is not the residence of a Chaplain, with
the exception of Sholapoor, and this appointment will, I hope,
in a few weeks be occupied. At the same time I think it
right to observe that owing to the great increase of Euro
peans in Bombay and in Poona I cannot regard either of those
places as duly served without another Chaplain.
3. In addition to the Clergy on the Ecclesiastical Es
tablishment there are also four provided from other sources
for the benefit of Europeans—the Master of the Byculla
Schools, the Minister of Kotree, the Curate of Saint Peter’s,
Mazagon, and the Chaplain of the Harbour. Three of these
have arrived during the past year. And I may add as a fact
of much interest in its bearing on our means of ministering
to Europeans, that of twenty Missionary Clergymen holding
licences in this diocese, sixteen officiate more or less frequently
to English congregations.
