74. Of the works on account of which this expenditure takes place, the
most considerable are those connected with the Harbour improvements at
Kurrachee, and the improvement of the Indus navigation at Sukkur.
75. The line of railway between Kotree and Kurrachee was seriously
damaged by the heavy rains of June and July.

77. A want of rolling stock is declared. This want has not been found,
however, great enough to deter traders from using the railway, and will, it
is promised, be speedily supplied. Arrangements have been made to
facilitate the interchange of rail and river traffic at Kotree. A particularly
favourable account is given of the trade which is attracted by the railway
from Central Asia by way of the Bhootan Pass. The transit of pressed
cotton from Ferozepoor was looked upon with satisfaction as being likely
to increase, but doubts are expressed as to whether any cotton pressed up-
country by other than Europeans or their agents would be saleable at Kur
rachee, where the cotton presses of Nicol and Co. are already in operation.
78. An extension of the railway at Kurrachee itself—the Keamaree
extension—is being carried out by the Harbour Works Department.
79. The roads in Sind are of four classes—first, those bridged through
out, cross-drained, and cleared ; second, those partially bridged, cross-drain
ed, and cleared ; third, those cross-drained and cleared ; fourth, those that
are cleared only. No roads are described as being metalled. Roads of
the first class cover 576 miles, and seem to be confined to the Collectorate of
Shikarpoor. Of the second, third, and fourth classes, the mileage is
respectively 495, 534, and 2,637J.
