RAILWAY OPERATIONS.
On the Great Indian Peninsula Railway 70f miles of new rail at the end of
the year under report was opened to traffic, making the total mileage open
507f. The 70f miles of new rail include the 13§ miles taken up by the
Bhore Ghaut Incline. The remaining 57 miles are due to the extension of
the North-West branch from Chalisgaum to Julgaum.
2. The Bhore Ghaut Incline surmounts a height of 1,800 feet,
and including the cost of two miles opened in 1858, has been finished
at a charge of £1,100,000. Its completion renders possible the full use
of the south-eastern extension as a carrier of goods. Up to the opening
of the Bhore Ghaut Incline, goods passing between the Concan and the
Deccan by railway had to break bulk at the Ghaut, and to be conveyed
over a steep rough road six miles in length, at a cost of eighteen pence
per ton per mile, at the rate of two miles an hour, and for four months
of the year under a rainfall of two hundred inches.
3. Of the 1,114 miles sanctioned for construction by the Great
Indian Peninsula Railway Company, 606 miles were at the close of the
official year still in the contractors’ hands. Of these, 9§ miles form the
break of the Thull Ghaut Incline, an incline of the same importance
to the traffic of the north-eastern line, which the Bhore Ghaut Incline is to
that of the south-eastern.
4. All the masonry work of the Thull Ghaut Incline was to be
finished by the end of 1863. The contract time for the completion of
the Incline was May 31st 1863; but it was not thought likely that
completion would take effect before May or October of 1864. The
works include 2,605 yards of tunnelling, of which 2,090 j^ards had been
finished at the close of the year under report. But of the untunnelled
portion 206 yards occur in one tunnel, which will probably be the last
work of the contract. Of the viaducts on this incline the Ehegaum
Viaduct is distinguished by its unusual dimensions. Its length is 250
yards, the middle piers rise to a height of 190 feet above the surface 0 f
the ground, and four of the spans are 150 feet in width.
5. Of the other lengths of the sanctioned line that are still in the
contractors’ hands those on the Nagpoor branch are the most important.
