PUBLIC WORKS RAILWAY.
Rail- rains caused a suspension of traffic operations. More damage was caused
in 1862-63 however. Traffic was stopped for ten days, and masonry works
as well as earthworks damaged.
25. The cause of this loss was the insufficient allowance made in
the original structure of the line for drainage. In many cases the embank
ments became dams, and the cuttings catch-water drains, after a few hours’
rain. Additional culverts and new bridges have since been supplied,
and embankments lined and strengthened.
26. At Kurrachee traffic accommodation has been extended by the
construction of new sidings at MacLeod Station. At Jungshai, in the middle
of the line, the station has been completed. Accommodation for telegraph
clerks has been furnished at the various passing places and stations. The
goods’ sheds at Kotree have been pushed forward, various new sidings
have been laid along the river bank, and cranes and other appliances for
facilitating the interchange of rail and river traffic provided.
27. A branch line to Ghizree has been finished, but is unopened,
and it is expected will remain unopened, there being no trade between
Ghizree and Kurrachee. The Keemaree extension has been commenced,
after a change of the intended route.
28. The total expenditure on this railway up to the 30th of April
(English expenditure for the last two weeks in April excepted) has been
£l,652,422,or £15,737 per mile. The cost per mile is expected to rise
to £18,000, before all is done which is necessary for the thorough completion
of the line. The expenditure in India up to the 30th of April 1863
was £983,130.
29. The average weekly receipts at the close of 1862-63 amounted
to
