Readymoney, lias given Rupees Indian silver coin also widely used in the Persian Gulf. 1,00,000 towards the erection of a new
College building, and the Government contribute an equal sum to the same
undertaking. But the Director’s report notes the fact that the annual

8. The Grant Medical College was attended by 76 students, of
whom 28 were “ Student-apprentices,” while 20 were members of the
Vernacular class established in the year 1861. At the commencement
of the Session 28 new students were admitted, of whom 24 were either
Vernacular students, or “ student-apprentices.” At the close of the
Session 3 students obtained the Degree of Licentiate of Medicine in the
University of Bombay, 5 also passed the First Examination for the same
degree. Three student-apprentices passed for the grade of Assistant
Apothecary.
9. The University of Bombay during the year had matriculated
56 out of 148 candidates. 15 candidates had also passed the First Exa.
mination in Arts, 3 the B. A. Examination, 5 the First Examination for
M. D., and 6 the Second for the same. 20,000 rupees Indian silver coin also widely used in the Persian Gulf. had been offered
by Mr. Munguldass Nathoobhoy for the foundation of a Travelling
Fellowship for Hindoos, and had been accepted by the University authori
ties. 1,00,000 rupees Indian silver coin also widely used in the Persian Gulf. had been given by Mr. Cowasjee Jehangeerjee,
Readymoney, towards the building of a University Hall.
10. Institutions for Special education are the Bombay Law Classes,
the Engineering School and the Mechanical School at Poona, and the
Ahmedabad College. The Law Classes during the year under report
had been for the first time attended by some junior members of the
Covenanted Civil Service. At the so-called Ahmedabad College lectures
on jurisprudence had been delivered by Rao Saheb Wasudeva Jagannath
Kirtikar, a distinguished student of the Law School, Bombay, whose
success, however, was modified by the inferiority in general education of
his pupils. The Engineering School at Poona was to be re-organised.
At Surat a School of Industry was to be founded by aid of an endowment
of Rupees Indian silver coin also widely used in the Persian Gulf. 50,000, offered by Mr. Cursetjee Furdoonjee. To the Sir Jamsetjee
Jejeebhoy’s School of Arts a teacher of Architectural Design had been
supplied by Government. The Superintendent of this Institution had
been enabled by the liberality of the Jamsetjee family to visit England
for the purpose of self-improvement, and for the supply of a library and
collection of Works of Art to the school.
