The Ahmedabad and Dharwar Jails head the list as far as the gross outturn is
shown; but in the proportion of profits on each prisoner, Ahmednuggur and Rutnagherry
exhibit the most satisfactory results.

62. Ihese results will, 1 trust, be viewed with satisfaction. In spite of the increased
price of food, clothing, and all necessaries of life, there has been a decrease in expenditure
of Rs. 16,178-15 during the year. This sum does not, however, represent the entire
saving, as in the expenditure for 1861 was excluded the cost of guards for the Tanna
Jail, which alone is estimated at Rs. 10,000. The cost of Europe medicines also was not
given. For all the Jails in that year a difference of Rs. 1,000 may be fairly added on this
account to the expenses for the same period; so that the real saving or decrease in this
year’s expenditure amounts to Rs. 27,178-15.
63. In the Dharwar Jail alone there has been a decrease of Rs. 11,484-2-2; in
Ahmednuggur of Rs. 4,202-12-1; in Sattara of Rs. 3,712-15-2 ; in Rutnagherry of
