18. Much improved; the use of water has been as far as possible restricted,and
that of lime interdicted altogether. Improved diet, conservancy,
Conservancy. anc [ ventilation in the cells may fairly be expected to result in
decrease of sickness and mortality during the curient yeai without additional expense.
RUTNAGHERRY.
This Jail was inspected in April very carefully. Like Dharwar it had not been
inspected since 1859, IN’umerous reforms were found to be
Inspection, necessary, such as reduction of guards and establishments, im
provements in conservancy arrangements and of the general discipline, &c. These have
now been effected, and under Mr. Crawford’s energetic superintendence the present
heavy costliness of the Jail will, I doubt not, be gradually reduced.
2 . Some few alterations and repairs have been carried out to the female prison;

Annual administration report of the Bombay Presidency The name given to each of the three divisions of the territory of the East India Company, and later the British Raj, on the Indian subcontinent. , providing a summary record of the main events and developments in each department of the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India.
