(T
Memo, on Askabad, Kuehan, Meshad Road, with reference to
its capabilities of being converted into a Rail-road, &c., &c.
In a memorandum I addressed to Her Britannic Majesty’s Legation by this
office No. 376, dated the 5th of September 1889, certain information was given
as to the Askabad Meshad Road and it has been thought best to attach a copy
thereof to this. Actual inspection of the road reported on has proved that many
corrections are necessary.
I left Askabad on the 28th of November and traversed the direction of the
road, which is not yet open throughout its whole length. The journey to Kuchan
occupied three days caravaning, that from Kuchan to Meshad two days in a
carriage with three horses.
Referring to the table attached, I found the first two sections precisely as
described therein. Section 3 was in a bad state, and vehicles frequently prefer
to take the open country, than to follow it. The bridges and culverts are so
badly and narrowly built, that four horses cannot go abreast over them; some
are of rickety wood-work ; in many places no culverts spanned the water-courses.
The road from Meshad rises imperceptibly to the neighbourhood of Shur-
cha {vide Napier’s map) where the watershed The boundary between adjacent drainage basins. between the Atrek and the Kash-
afrud is crossed at a distance of about 68 miles from Meshad.
I find that the distances from Meshad to Kuchan in sections Nos. 1 and 2
