let the annexed statement of imports and exports speak for them
selves. Judging from these, the general improvement and
increase in trade reported in 1887 was more marked in 1888,
which shows an increase in gross value of imports of 303,919^.,
while those of 1889 show an increase of only 118,506J. The
exports for 1888 show an increase in gross value of 36,671/. over
those of 1887, and those for 1889 an increase of 106,887/., or
more than three times the amount of increase in 1888.
The exports from these tables appear to have exceeded the
imports by 168,491/. in 1888 and 156,872/. in 1889., and do not
compare favourably with the exports in 1887, which show an
excess of 462,739/. over the imports.
Of the articles of imports, wheat and rice show a very marked
decrease, while the export in the former in 1889 was nearly
double of that in 1888.
The prohibition against exportation of Arab horses from
Turkey was removed in 1888, and the export table shows an
increase in number of 609. From this it may be presumed that
the prohibition in former years was of practically little effect.
Exportation of Arab mares is strictly prohibited.
