T have the honour to enclose herewith my Report on the
Tiade and Commerce of the Trebizond Vilayet for the year 1889.

Report on the Trade and Commerce of the Trebizond Vilayet for the
Year 1889,
Trade.
The aggregate trade of the vilayet of Trebizond may be Trade,
valued at 2,024,115/. for exports, and 2,966,760/. for imports, by
adding to the annexed tabulated totals for Trebizond and Samsoon
a rough estimate of the trade at Rizeh, Tripoli, Kerassond, Ordoo,
and Unia.
The Anatolian products, as well as those of the Black Sea Exports,
littoral, were unusually plentiful, being thus the means of
improving the export trade in general, which at Trebizond alone
shows an increase, without that of Persia, of 157,870 cwts. and
14,210/., and at Samsoon 1 , 112,345 cwts. and 403,500/.
Such articles as have not been affected by the normal fluctua
tions of trade may be given as follows:—
Increase in haricot beans due to good crops is perceptible, half Beaus,
or which export has, as usual, been sent to France, and thence to
other countries as French beans.
Decrease to almost a nullity in the export of box-wood arises Box wood,
from its not having been a profitable article of trade in Europe.
Increase in the exportation of cattle from the interior would Cattle,
mve been greater owing to good prices at Constantinople, had
accommodation been afforded by steamers for the conveyance of
fmeep at the ordinary freight of from 2s. to 2s. 6d. per head.
increase to double the quantity in the import of hazelnuts, Hazelnut*,
out of proportion to value, is consequent on low prices. About
5<,o60 cwts. (34,536/.) have been shipped to England, against
9,456 cwts. (7,565/.) in 1888. 8 6
