^ I have the honour to transmit herewith my Report on the
Trade of Khorassan for the financial year 1889-90, together with
Returns of Imports and Exports for the same period.

Report on the Trade of KhXassan for the Year 1889-90.
The information contained in this, the first trade report that Introductory
has been compiled since the establishment of a British Consulate-
General in Khorassan, does not p-etend to absolute accuracy, but
the figures given, procured with considerable difficulty from the
most reliable sources available, may, however, be considered as
approximately correct.
. There are only two main routes by which British goods arc Imports,
imported into Meshed. The firstf is by the Black Sea, Trebizond,
labriz, and Teheran, entailing aJ caravan journey of about 1,600
miles. No transit dues are levied by the Turkish Government
on goods coining this way, and 5 per cent, only is paid on arrival
at Tabriz. The goods are then nought by Persian merchants, and
despatched to Khorassan, where a further duty of 2 £ per cent, is
levied. An English firm, with .jn agent in Khorassan, would not
pay this latter sum, as, by treaty, English goods only pay 5 per
cent, on entering Persian territory, and no further dues can be
levied on them in any part of the kingdom. The camel hire
from 1 rebizond to Meshed is about 27| tumans {11. 17s. 2d.) a
load, and the journey at the beit season of the year would take
about four months. The seevrd route is by the
Persian Gulf
