I have the honour to submit for your Lordship s information a
Keport on the Trade of Baghdad for the years 1887 and 1888.

Report on the Trade of Baghdad for the Years 1887 and 1388.
It is impossible to give detailed returns of the goods imported into
and exported from Baghdad. The figures in the returns represent the
imports and exports by British steamers only, and probably an estimate
that those by Turkish steamers are half as much again would not be
verv wide of the mark. . ,
"The imports from India during the years 1887 and 1888 remained Imports,
about the same, while those from Europe during 1888 increased about
20 per cent, over those in 1887. The increase was principally due to
the import of Manchester goods. . ,ooo Wnr
T'ne import of sugar from Marseilles was not so large in 1888 ou - ar -
as in 1887. Sugar was brought into Baghdad mostly for exportation
into Persia, but the decrease was probably owing to the Persian market
having been supplied in 1888 from the north via the Black Sea and

Baghdad with effect from April 3; this rate has since been maintained,
except in the case of the Turkish lira, or pound, which has advanced
two and a half per cent. This advance was only to be expected as the
value of the lira was fixed at 100 grand signior piastres and the
medjidie at 19, no allowance being made for the usual agio on the
gold coin. The efiect of the order mentioned was to give a decided
impetus to the import trade, the relative cost of a sovereign before and
after the reduction being respectively 170 and 111 grand signior
