crop was good, but purchases were confined principally to three or four
merchants who exported about 30,000 skins all to London.
I he export of galls increased 35 per cent in 1888 over that in 1887
the crop having proved plentiful.
The export of gum fell off’25 per cent in 1888.
Some enquiries have been made as to the prospects of trade in
liquorice-root, which plant grows wild on the banks of the Euphrates
ana Tigris, but the quality is said to be inferior, aud for various reasons
transactions in it might lead to disappointment.
Many Persian pilgrims came here towards the end of 1888 to visit
the holy shrines at Karbala, Najaf, &c, and this always has a beneficial
effect on trade, as they buy largely in the bazaars.
there have been few failures, indeed none of any consequence, and
in this respect the trade of Baghdad in 1888 was good.
In addition to the three British firms alreadv in Baghdad viz
Messrs. Stephen Lynch & Co.; Messrs. Darby, Andrewes & Co.; and
the 1 ersian Gulf Trading Co., late Messrs. Muir, Tweedy & Co.’ a
fourth firm was established in 1888, viz., Messrs. T. S. Blockev & Go.
