climax has not, of course, the same significance for English as for
trench spectators but even on our stage it is by no means ineffective.
l.me and Honour has for some time been played in the provinces by
Miss Kate aughan and her company with considerable success which
was last night fully sustained at the Grand Theatre, Islington. In
the role of the unfortunate heroine tom asunder between "her love
for her child and her duty to her husband, Miss Vaughan shows an
emotional power of which she had not before been suspected by
her warmest admirers. Her voice has lost much of its thinness of
qua.ity, and her pathos, if it does not go ver deep, is nevertheless quite
sound and true within its limited scope. It may be added that Miss
\ aughan wears some of the most tasteful toilettes that Islington playgoers
are likely to see for some time to come, and that after the serious work of
t e evening is over she gives with bewitching piquancy her dainty mono
logue How It Happened. ’ In the course of this sketch of a dancing-
mistress s courtship Miss Vaughan introduces a waltz; and this alone might
well repay a lover of ideal stage dancing for his long journey due north,
in other ways, too, the entertainment at the Grand this week is thoroughly
satisfactory, for in her more ambitious achievement Miss Vau han is really
well supported by Mr. Charles Fulton, who is particularly fresh and plausible
m his method of drawingroom villainy, Mr. i.ethcourt, Mrs. Bradley, and
a child actress named Gracie Noble.
I nless rumour does him an injustice, Mr. Gilbert is so much annoyed by the
adverse cmicism which “ Brantinghame Hallhas encountered that he has
