Those at Mira], Mudhol, Mahalingpur and Jamkhandi are the
only old established ones. That at.Lakshmeshvar was established
two years ago. The funds in these five are reported ample; but
the resources of the other four are very limited, and very little,
if anything, seems to be attempted.
Attention seems chiefly to be given to conservancy and road
making. At Miraj water is brought from the bed of a nala at
some distance from the town and is distributed to all parts by
iron pipes. Jamkhandi is supplied with water from a tank at
some distance from the town, but in bad seasons this runs dry in
January and then much suffering results.
The rainfall was generally sufficient and the outturn of crops
good. The rain, however, seems to have fallen variously and iu
one part crops suffered for want of it and in another from excess.
The cotton crop suffered greatly from want of a timely fall of
rain in the cold weather. In Mhysal on the banks of the Krishna
there were bumper crops.
An aggregate of Rs. 1,27,616 was spent by all the States on
public works this year as against Rs. 1,53,914 in the preceding
year.. The largest proportion of this was spent on roads and
buildings. Rs. 10,884 were spent of school-houses, and Rs. 9,614
and Rs.. 7,160 on water-supply and accommodation for travellers
respectively. A sum of Rs. 7,746 also was spent on planting trees.
The two Kurundvad States and Ramdurg spent very little owing
to their indebtedness. Jamkhandi has no such excuse, but very
little has yet been done by the Chief to improve the communica
tions in his districts. Miraj spent Rs. 59,723, Mudhol Rs. 33,382,
and Miraj (Junior) Rs. 11,770.
The income and expenditure of each of the States during the
la.st revenue year are shown in the subjoined table contrasted
with that of the preceding year :—-
