Have arrived Basrah. Cables have been received from Irrawaddy Flotilla
Company, Bangoon, Mac Neills, Calcutta, and Agent, Burma .Railways,
liangoon, reference re-purchase certain of their vessels they wish returned to
India. They quote a communique, dated Delhi. 29th January, re my appoint
ment. Please telegraph its purport and state whether sanction is given to my
dealing direct with all firms interested. Further communication will follow
regarding steps taken for immediate return of vessels after conference fixed for
3rd February.

Your telegram B. 2, February 2nd (Diary No. 9279). Communique
issued is as follows :—
Begins. Colonel, Maxwell, I. W. T., has been deputed to Mesopotamia to
make enquiries with regard to the river and harbour craft to be eventually
returned to India and to prepare a catalogue of the same. Any shipping or
other firms now desirous of negotiating for any particular craft, or for craft of
a partienlar type, are advised to communicate on the subject direct with
Colonel Maxwell whose address is care of Inspector-General of Communica
tions, Basrah. Telegram care of Communications, Basrah. Ends. Further
communication will follow shortly.
