In accordance with Admiralty instructions the Naval Commander-in-Chief,
East Indies, has asked me to reduce wave length of Basrah wireless station from
3,000 metres to 600 metres for war warnings and press-messages. The effect
of this would be to prevent Basrah sending press and (propa ganda?) messages

to distant stations such as Meshed and Baku owing to the reduction in range.
I should he glad of your instructions as this is a matter of some importance.
Meanwhile the sending of press-messages from Basrab wireless station on waves
other than 600 metres will be discontinued.

With reference to Special Army Order No. 14, January 29th. Informa
tion on the following points would be welcomed.
1. Is it intended before local sale or disposal otherwise to thoroughly refit
existing Mechanical Transport vehicles in this country.
2. If so, approximately 40 officers and 500 artificers other ranks will hav-
to be maintained for at least another year for special services and for Mechani
cal Transport depots only. Some 500 artificers must be maintained for Mecha
nical Transport units of army of occupation in addition to those. The Director
of Technical Recruiting in India could possibly find some of these artificers.
It is not anticipated that local personnel additional to that now employed can
be obtained.
Under 2 above, modifications in requirements could he made should (A)
vehicles he sent to India which require extensive repairs, (B) the construction
be carried out of the light line towards Mosul asked for in my X-5272 of Feb
ruary 4th (Diary No. 9226).
