2.—Levelling and Tidal Operations.

Automatic tidal observations were carried on throughout the year at the ports of Aden
Karachi, Port Albert Victor (Kathiawdr), Apollo Bandar (Bombay), and Prince's Dock
(Bombay). The observatories at Perim and Porbandar were closed during the year. At Aden
the stoppage of the driving clock suspended tidal observations in February. No serious in
terruptions occurred at the other stations. The usual tide pole observations were taken at
Bhavnagar.
The tide-tables for the Indian ports for 1903 were published as usual, including predictions
for Okha Point, Bhavnagar and Kdrwdr.
3. —Revenue Surveys.
1. Two special establishments were retained in Gujarat—-a field party and a staff of
classers and register writers at the Central Record Office, Broach. The field party was employ
ed during the field season in the districts of Ahmedabad, Kaira, Broach and the Panch Mahdls
in connection with the measurement of lands taken up for famine relief works. A total of 4 243
survey numbers was measured with an acreage of 7,347 acres. The staff of register writers'was
employed (i) on the preparation of the akarbands of the Broach, Amod and Vagra talukasof the
Broach District and of the Kalol and Godhra tdlukas of the Panch Mahals; "(ii) on the dupli
cation of the akarbands of the Broach, A'mod, Vdgra, Kalol and Chikhli tdlukas ; and (iii) on
the calculation of the himayat, sub-soil and akasia assessments of 14 villages in the Matar
taluka. The classers carried on the corrections in the survey records necessitated by the
measurements of lands taken up for famine relief works.
2. The Akrdni field party resumed its survey operations and during the field season surveyed
three isolated mam vdlages (one each in Sholapur, Poona and Nasik) and one Government village

measurement work in the Bam and Sholapnr talukas and prepared demarcation maps of 131
villages m connection with projected extensions of the Nira and Gokak Canals. The Survey
JJattardars establishment prepared akarbands for 337 Government and 6 indm villages,
settlement proposals for two inhm villages in SatSra were submitted. °
3. The field party in the Southern Division was employed in clearing off arrears of measure-
ment of new roads made during the famine in the Belgaum and Bijfipur Districts. The Survey
Daftardar s establishment was employed mainly on the preparaiion of akarbands according to
revision rates sanctioned for the Mahdd taluka.
4. Five parties of trained Tapeddrs were engaged in survey operations in the Sind Districts
