Public health showed no improvement, deaths from both plague and small-pox
increasing considerably in number. Some progress was made in works of
street-improvement. Considering the serious epidemics prevalent during the
year, it is satisfactory that the number of pupils in Municipal schools showed
practically no decline.
28 # The general prosperity of the year produced a distinct improvement
in the financial position of the District Municipalities in spite of the loss of
income due to the evacuation of houses caused hy plague. In Sind there was a
book decrease in receipts which was more than counterbalanced hy a large
decrease in expenditure. In all divisions of the

made available at Nagpada. Modifications were introduced into several of the
other schemes, but good progress was made in the acquisition of properties
affected thereby. Some progress was also made with the provision of
quarters for the police and tenements for the poor. Revenue operations showed
a satisfactory credit balance. A ne\y loan of Rs. 60

shipped at Bombay, but a large increase in the number shipped at Aden,
I here was a satisfactory decrease in the number of desertions. At both ports
the number of Native seamen shipped showed a large increase. The financial
position of both shipping offices also showed an improvement.
32. The general improvement in trade produced at all the three Ports
of Bombay, Karachi and Aden fresh financial records. The improvement

The financial success of the Karachi Trust was again chiefly due to the export
wheat trade. Preparations for improving the railway facilities of the port
