9. There were four Municipalities (two in Bhor and one each in Phaltan and Jath) with
aggregate incomes and expenditures of Bs. 22,377 and Rs. 23,129 against Rs. 15,277 and
Rs. 14,598, respectively, in the previous year.
10. The aggregate expenditure on Public Works rose from Rs. 99,397 to Rs. 1,45,608.
11. Births rose from 14,212 to 15,185 and deaths from 13,682 to 13^767. In Phaltan,
Akalkot and Jath there were 2,783 deaths from plague. Yaccinations numbered 10,343
against 11,326.
12. There were seven dispensaries, including a travelling dispensary in Akalkot, which
treated 53,347 patients at a cost of Rs. 14,269.
13. The number of schools rose from 151 to 154, but the number of pupils dropped from
5,765 to 5,641. The total aggregate cost rose from Rs. 38,507 to Rs. 41,270.
VL—SOUTHERN MAHRATTA COUNTRY STATES.
1.—KOLHAPUB.

Population (1901)—910,011; Gross Revenue —Ks. 64,51,719 ; Tribute to British Government—'
Nil; Military Force —688 ; Principal Articles of Production —Rice, jowari, sugarcane, tobacco,
cotton, etc.; Manufactures —Coarse cotton and woollen cloths, pottery and hardware.
3. There are nine feudatory Jaghirs which pay tribute to Kolhapur, each managed by
its chief.
2. The chief events of the year were the visit of His Excellency the Governor (Sir
James Monteath) and the betrothal of Her Highness Radhabai Akasaheb, the daughter of His
Highness the Maharaja, to His Highness Tukojirao Powar Rajesaheb of Devas. Also during
the year the Residuary Criminal Jurisdiction in the Feudatory Estates was restored to the
Maharaja by Government.
3. Rainfall was satisfactory and all crops good. The prices of most of the staple food
grains were below the normal.
4. The number of Police increased from 808 to 873 owing to the employment of a
temporary force in connection with plague. The cost increased from Rs. 77,780 to Rs. 80,455.
Crime showed a general decrease. The number of offences reported to the Police fell from 806
to 610. Of 527 persons put on trial, 289 were convicted and 186 were awaiting trial at the
close of the year. Stolen property was valued at Rs. 89,542, and recoveries amounted to 62
per cent, as against 50 per cent, in 1902-1903.
5. The 62 criminal courts dealt with 6,154 persons and convicted 1,194 of them, while
1,111 persons were awaiting trial at the end of the year. The Chief Sessions Court disposed
of 54 cases involving 181 persons, of whom 124 were convicted. Oat of 287 criminal appeals
the applications were rejected in 69 and the sentences confirmed in 75, while they were
reversed in 89.
6. The number of prisoners in the 18 prisons fell from 1,874 to 1,680 and the cost of
maintenance from Rs. 27,653 to Rs. 19,944.
7. There were 38 civil courts as against 37 in the previous year. Suits for disposal
numbered 6,517 as against 7,249, and arrears 2,181 as against 2,242. Out of 610 appeals 288
were disposed of. Special appeals to His Highness the Maharajahs Court were in all 346 and of
these 138 against 57 were disposed of,
8. The number of documents registered was 5,483 against 6,042 and fees realised
Rs. 28,297 against Rs. 32,024. The cost fell from Rs. 7,587 to Rs. 6,153.
9. The Kolhapur Municipality was suspended owing to its maladministration and was
handed over to a

official for management. Its income rose from Rs. 52,243 to
Rs. 62,5/9 owing to increase in the sale of night-soil manure. The other 8 municipalities had
an aggregate income and expenditure of Rs. 22,959 and Rs. 17,266 against Rs. 24,709 and
Rs. 25,240 respectively of the previous year.
10. The military force consisted of 533 infantry under an European officer and a Risala
body-guard of 155. Maintenance charges fell from Rs. 1,15,172 to Rs. 1,08,015.

Annual administration report of the Bombay Presidency The name given to each of the three divisions of the territory of the East India Company, and later the British Raj, on the Indian subcontinent. , providing a summary record of the main events and developments in each department of the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. during the financial year 1903-04. The report was printed at the Government Central Press, Bombay [Mumbai] in 1904.
