The total expenditure under this head on the several works under the direct control
of the Commission was Rs. 3,252, of which Rs. 1,170 was expended on River Gauge
Establishment at Sukkur, Kotri and Jerruck.
The usual snagging tour was undertaken by the Deputy Conservator and Registrar
and in all 27 snags and some small trees were removed, the greater number being removed
by capstan and engine power and the rest blown up by dynamite. Several snags were
removed from the mouth of the Uchito. This continued removal of the snags and obstruc
tions from the bar at the mouth of this branch is effecting a gradual, though certain,
improvement in the flow of a channel which, without such care, would possibly have nearly
silted up ; already indeed cultivators have suffered considerably from shortness of th
supply carried by this channel.
The following is a summary of the expenditure of the year :—

Though the river was fairly high, there was no great erosion necessitating the
construction of large loops and there was but little difficulty in maintaining the existing
canal mouths. The grants made during the year were, therefore, chiefly for the purpose of
bringing existing Bunds to the full height and section required.
The usual surveys of reaches of the river, where erosion is active, were made; the study
of these surveys has, in several cases, led to the abandonment or postponement of loop
bunds which had been proposed, and iu this way Government have been saved from very
considerable expenditure.
This report would be incomplete without an expression of deep regret for the death
of the late Secretary to the Commission, Mr. E. F. Dawson, which occurred in April last.
To Mr, Dawsou is due the present organisation of the Commission.
