A full account of irrigational works and revenue for the past year is given h
Chapters IV and V. A notable feature of the year’s work was the completion
of the automatic sluices at Lake Fife whereby an increase of 46 per cent, in ^
available storage of the reservoir has been effected. Considerable progress ^
also made with the masonry dam at Chankapur in connection with the Gir r , a
Left Bank Canal. In all divisions careful attention was paid to small tanks
a large number of which were put into repair and also investigated for theij
irrigational possibilities. A preliminary survey was carried out for the propo^l
Mahi Eiver Canal, which, it is estimated, would protect roughly 30,000 acres
of rice and 10,000 acres of rabi. The survey of the proposed reservoir on tfc
Sabarmati was commenced, but the preparation of the project has been
suspended until it is known to what extent the Native States concerned viil
participate.
The surveys in the Deccan, chiefly under the Superintending Engineer on
Special Duty, included investigations for cana Is on the Godaveri, Ghod, j\ T en
Eight Bank, the Bhima, the Uina, Kukari, Uula, Ghatprabha at Gokak ni
Pravara to command some 4,200,000 acres, and gccd progress has been made
with the projects.
The total area irrigated from the Deccan and Gujarat Works for whicl
Capital and Eevenue Accounts are kept was 131,905 acres against 87,819 acrei
in the previous year. The gross assessed revenue rose from Es. 7,79,638 in
1903-04 to Es. 8,45,905.
In Sind the inundation was moderate, the river reaching the fail
irrigating level of 13 feet at Bukkur for 40 days in the year. In general the
canals worked well with the exception of the Unharwah and Sukkur Canals,
where difficulties were experienced from erosion and consequent silting. Fair
progress was made with tree planting on the banks of canals. As usual the
discharges of the Indus were measured at Sukkur and Kotri, while silt experi
ments were continued at the former of these two places.
The Indus Eiver Commission in addition to its important systematic
hydrographic and topographic surveys and study and record of the conditions
of the Indus undertook borings to determine the possibility of a 'weir at Sukhr
The area irrigated by all classes of works in the Province was 2,923,928
acres against 3,151,807 acres in the previous year and 2,625,671 acres inthe
year 1902-03. The gross assessed revenue amounted to Es. 66,47,292, of which
Es. 4,91,9o8 were on account of direct and Es. 61,55,334 on account of indirect
receipts, the corresponding figures for the years 1902-03 and 1903-04 beii$
Es. 56,97,586 (Es. 4,67,651 direct and Es. 52,29,935 indirect) and Es. 78,33,716
(Rs. 5,00,835 direct and Es. 68,32,881 indirect) respectively.
48. During the year 205 miles of railway were opened for traffic. The most
impoitant addition was the Agra-Delhi Chord Eailway, having a length of 126
miles. Several important new lines were under construction, fair progress having
been made with the new Matheran Tramway. The conversion of the Wadkw&n*
Eajkot section of the Morvi Eailway to the metre gauge was completed during
the year and the new line opened by His Excellency the Governor of Bombay-
The earnings of all the more important lines showed a distinct improvement.
49. Owing to a change in accounts procedure at the Mint both the gross
revenue and expenditure were roughly 3 crores less than in the previous yea 1 '*
There was nevertheless areal fall in Imperial Eevenue chiefly on account of
smaller realisations under Land Eevenue and Opium. Provincial receipts
increased by 49
