1.—Bombay.
1. The number of European seamen shipped was 2,565 and of those discharged 2 4 i
Deserters further fell from 46 to 21. Thirty-four were sent home distressed and subsist '
was ^iven to 19. Charges on account of distressed seamen amounted to Rs. 25.628, Sp ^
money orders increased from Rs. 1,013 to Rs. 3,798.
2. The number of native seamen shipped rose from 35,024 to 37,534, while the n
discharged rose from 30,832 to 35,116. Deaths increased from 150 to 159, while 56 §
were left in hospital and 23 in jail. Charges on account of distressed seamen fpll
Rs. 1,257-4-0 to Rs. 593.
3. Gross income rose from Rs. 68,445 to Rs. 74,218, while expenditure increaseii f
Rs. 19,265 to Rs. 20,604. The net profits were Rs. 53,614 as against Rs. 49,179
Receipts from registry fees show the largest increase. * ^
4. Six Marine Courts of Inquiry were held during the year. In four cases no Ha®
w r as attached to the ships' officers. In one case the certificates of the Captain and Chief Officer^
suspended for 6 and 3 months respectively, while in a second the certificate of the Secori
Officer was suspended for three months and the Master severely reprimanded for reprehecsitli
carelessness.
2. —Aden,
The numbers of European and Native seamen engaged were respectively 25 and 101!
against 130 and 1,506 last year. The numbers discharged were 50 and 991 as against 16/ail
1,424 in the previous year. Thirteen European seamen were sent to the United Kin4i,
Fees realised Rs. 2,665, showing a decrease of Rs. 799. The decreases were due to Ik
prevalence of plague.
3.—Bombay Port Trust.
1. ^ Gross receipts amounted to Rs. 65,93,056, a record in the history of the Trust, ail
exceeded the expenditure, which amounted to Rs.. 58,47 473, by Rs. 7,45,583. The mostnoticealfe
increases under imports were of rice and grain, kerosine oil, piece-goods, timber and siigw,
Imports of coal, hay and straw declined. Exports of coal, grain, kerosine oil, and piece-godi
increased, while those of cotton, seeds, twist and yarn decreased.
Ihe number of steamers which entered the docks or were berthed at the outer ml
was 1,518, with an aggregate tonnage of 2,596.709 as compared with 1,533 with an
aggregate tonnage of 2,571,771. Dry Dock earnings increased from Rs. 1,66,00011
Rs. 1,73,000, and the number of vessels docked rose from 177 to 185. The total numberf
squaie-iigged vessels entering the Port was 2,470 with an aggregate tonnage of 3,010,1
against 2,389 with a tonnage of 2,835,548 in the previous year.
3. The expenditure on capital works amounted to Rs. 28,27,662. The principal
works carried out or coutinued were the completion of the new hydraulic power station fori
Docks at an aggregate cost of Rs. 3,87,598; the excavation of the South Dock channeli
the reclamation works and jetties at Tank Bunder; the extension of Ballard Pier to meet 1
line of the New Dock Mole ; and work in connection with the dams for the new docks. 1

rate of Rs. 104-8-7. At the close of the year the total debt stood at Rs. 6,11,51,013.

nono saffroned loan of Rs. 21 idkhs was raised in December at the satisfactory
Rs. 99-12-9J.

Annual administration report of the Bombay Presidency The name given to each of the three divisions of the territory of the East India Company, and later the British Raj, on the Indian subcontinent. , providing a summary record of the main events and developments in each department of the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. during the financial year 1904-05.
