tho present weir crest, viz. U. L. 2,008*06, the discharge being estimated at 39,792 cubic feet
per second, equal to a run-off of 0*06 inch per hour from the whole catchment basin (1,080
square miles).
As the water was exhausted on 29th April 1904, and, but for timely rainfall, the working
of the Mills would have been stopped, the weir was temporarily raised by a wall one foot thick
and 1*69 feet high, after the monsoon, at a cost of Rs. 637, in order to obtain additional storage.
The level of the storage was actually raised by this means by 1*29 feet. The additional storage
of 142 million cubic feet thus obtained, was equivalent to a supply of 23 days for irrigation and
the Mills and was of the greatest possible value, as, early in the season, the river discharge
began dwindling and was less than usual.
The storage was first drawn upon on the 14th December 1904.
Experiments were made to ascertain the rate of evaporation from the reservoir with results
recorded in the following table :—

The total loss by evaporation during the year was 4*41 feet of vertical depth. This result
is exclusive of absorption.
With a view to encourage irrigation and enable the people to appreciate the value of
irrigation for non-perennial crops, water from the Muchkundi Tank in the Bijapur District is
to be offered free for five years from October 1903 for crops of the above nature.
Gaddikeri and the M&vinkop Tanks are works which have consolidated assessment, and the
revenue does not vary.
From June to December every year a large quantity of water runs to waste from the
Madag Tank, part of which, it is thought, may be utilized for irrigation. The survey work for
a canal to serve lands under command, which was commenced last year, is in progress, and is
likely to be completed by the end of September next.
In the Belgaum District 60 tanks were put into thorough repair at a cost of Rs. 45,970,
and 48 were surveyed at a cost of Rs. 3,539. A sum of Rs. 92,320 was spent on repairs to 76
tanks in the D liar war Irrigation District.
During the year under report experiments were made to ascertain the slopes of the “ Line
of Saturation^ in earthen dams of Gaddikeri, Medleri, Unkal, Nehr, Pingli and Mayni Tanks.
The experiments have not proved conclusive yet and they are to be continued for another year.
'Work done by the Superintending Engineer on Special Duty.
The projects submitted during the year to Government by the Superintending Engineer
on Special Duty were : —
(1) The Gokdk Canal Extension, small scheme, including one storage reservoir and the
extension of the canal for 34 miles. The total cost (direct and indirect) was put down at
Rs. 3*2,74,000, and the final net revenue (excluding interest charges) was estimated at
Rs. 71,000. The increased area of irrigation anticipated was 15,000 acres out of a gross
command of 75,000 acres ; and
(2) The Gokdk Canal Extension, large project. This comprised two large tanks, a
main canal 88 miles long, and 5 branches aggregating 84 miles in length. The probable
increased area of irrigation was calculated to be 92,000 acres. The estimates show—
Rs.
Total cost (direct and indirect) ... ... 1,51,36,000
Net Revenue (neglecting interest) ... ... 3,51,092
These parers were submitted in October 1901 and March 1905, respectively, but the
drawings were not completely finished till June.
The other office work done during the past year was the preparation of papers in connection
with—
(a) the Godaveri Canals Project, commanding 240,000 acies in the Nasik and Nagar
districts ;
(b) the Ghod Right Bank Canal Project, which will command 122,000 acres in the
Poona district, near Sirur; and
(c) the Nira Right Bank Canal, small project, with a command of 344,000 acres in
Phaltan State and the Shol&pur district.
The schemes will be submitted to Government in the order shown.
