An introduction to medicine and compendium of medical terminology in three chapters ( funūn ), each subdivided into sections ( aqsām ) and headings ( fusūl ), by Masʿūd ibn Muḥammad al-Sijzī (مسعود بن محمد السجزي, fl. before 1334).

The treatise, the title of which is given in the preface (f. 1v, line 15), is dedicated to a vizier by the name of Ṣadr al-Dawlah Abī al-Mufākhir Qāsim ibn ʿIrāq ibn Jaʿfar (صدر الدولة [...] أبي المفاخر قاسم بن عراق بن جعفر, see f. 1v, lines 5-7, transcribed below).

Contents:

  • Chapter One: On things pertaining to the general [principles] of medicine and notes to make them easier to understand (الفن الأول في ماهيات الأشياء التي يتعلق بكليات الطب ورسومها التقريبية, ff. 2r- 23r);
  • Chapter Two: On instructions for the processes and productions related to the principles of medicine (الفن الثاني في كيفيات الأعمال والصناعات المتعلقة بأصول الطب, ff. 23r-30v);
  • Chapter Three: On how many sections [medical] matters are divided into generally [on medical theory, arranged by number of conceptual divisions] (الفن الثالث في كميات أقسام أمور منقسمة انقسامًا كليًا ff. 30v-34v). The tenth and last section of this chapter is not found in the present copy.

The text is followed by three folios of mixed contents: an entry on weights and measures used in medical books (f. 35r); a short treatise on the pulse attributed to the physician and translator Ḥubaysh ibn al-Ḥasan (حبيش بن الحسن, here written erroneously as Ḥubaysh al-Ḥusayn [حبيش الحسين]), nephew and pupil of the physician and translator Ḥunayn ibn Isḥāq (حنين بن إسحق, d. 873; ff. 35r-36v); and recipes for a draught to ease stomach-pains and a stimulant electuary (ff. 36v-37v).

الحمد لله على إياديه المتواترة وصنائعه المتقاطرة والصلوة على كاشف الغمة

وشفيع الأمة محمد وعلى آله الأنقياء وأصحابه الأصفياء وبعد فإن العبد مسعود

بن محمد السجزي الطبيب وفقه الله لصادق الأقوال وصالح الأعمال يقول

لما اتصلت بخدمة الصاحب الأجل السيد الكبير العالم العادل المؤيد المقبل المفضل

الميمون صدر الدولة والدين قوام الإسلام والمسلمين ملك وزراء الشرق و

الغرب أبي المفاخر قاسم بن عراق بن جعفر...
