The increase in the area, which has been continuously going on during the past three
years is for the most part, due to there being sufficient water in the tanis d i ing the rains
for the r ce crop. The assessed revenue has not, however, proportionately increased duritg the
curre t year owing to large remissions (Rs. 5,465) granted in the Kalgliatgi and Kod Talukas
in the Dharw&r District.
This work, which was originally opened for Famine Relief during 1906-190/, was in Tank at ShccTfcal;
prcg?ess during the year under report. A sum of Rs. 23,294 was then spent on it, making the
total outlay Rs. 60,527, against the estimated cost of Rs. 65,056 sanctioned in Government
Resolution No. 1.-2425, dated 1th October 1907. The work is still in progress.
The construction was commerced f two additional Rest-houses—one at Konkan, Taluka irrigation Rest-
Hangai, and the other at Lakikop, Taluka Banka pur. The expenditure incurred on these two ou^..
Wildings was Rs 8,302, which inclu ies that incurred on the construction of two we! s in their
^pounds. A third n.;w well m the compound of the Irrigation Rest-house ncai Ha.iga
a so sanctioned, and the work is in progress.
The construction of this building ha-been practically completed, the total expenditme Residence
cmg hs. 15,431 against the estimatedi cost, Rs. 15,155. Dharwar Irrigation.
35.—Protective Irrigation ’Works.
Twenty rain and river gauges, which were transferred to the Belgaum, Satdra and ^anaia
i ? tnets, were maintained during the year by the Executive Engineers of those hostile
i e f! es i r these ^ rain gauges at Yekambi in the Sirsi Taluka, Shriugeri and Adur in tire
W 1 ' I'dluka, and at Doni in the Gadag Taluka were fixed.
\ T ov^ ow 4 n these canals began on the 18th June 1908, and ceased in the month^of
em^ei. The tanks dependent on this system were filled and many of them ove> l >we or
,i]l, n lme : irrigated crops were in good e ndition and the outturn was a noimai one or
u PP er reaches, and 75 / of normal in the lower reaches of the canals. The
