1. The total number of inmates was 187 being a decrease of 6 compared with last year. Government Male
nf these, 37 obtained employment, 24 deseited, 24 were deported, 29 convicted, 2 sent to the Workhouse,
l unatic Asylum, 16 sent to the Stranger’s Home, 10 handed over to relatives, 24 discharged
Thing, means, 1 sent to the Seamen s Rest and 1 made casual. The number remaining in the
Workhouse at the end of the year was 19 The total cost was Rs. 9,068 against
p, 8 550 for the preceding year. From the daily average population, the average cost
per annum for each inmate is estimated at Rs. 349 against Rs. 285 for the preceding year.
There was no inmate daring the year.

3 . The total cost to Government on account of the Vagrancy Act was Rs. 9,518 Expenditure
against Rs. 9,841 in the preceding year.
3. Wild Animals and Venomous Snakes.

1. The number of persons killed by wild animals was 36 compared with 32 in the Dama-e.
previous year. Deaths from snake-bite shew an increase from 1,248 to 1,345 ; of these,
271 occurred in Ratn%iri, 155 in Hyderabad and 101 in Thana. Cattle killed by wild
animals and snakes number 9,104, an increase of 1,272 on the figures of last year. These
include more than 5,500 animals killed by wolves in Hyderabad and Thar and Parkar Districts.
2. The total amount of rewards paid was Rs. 3,588 against Rs. 3,394 in 1908, the Rewards,
number of animals destroyed being 1,573, nearly double the number of the previous year.
Amongst the animals killed are 34 tigers, 192 panthers and 189 wolves The number of
snakes destroyed has increased from 20,788 to 33,770. This figure includes 20,341 destroyed in
Ratndgiri, 4,152 in Hyderabad and 6,137 in Thar and Parkar. Only Rs. 69 were paid in
rewards.
3. The number of gun licenses issued for crop protection, etc., was 3,093, a decrease of License?.
1,533 from last year’s figures. The total number of licenses in force during the year was
15,941.
4. Chemical Analysis.
For details see the Annual Report of the Chemical Analyser to Government and the tables under Medico-legal
Investigations printed in Part VI of the Statistics of British India.
1. There was an increase in the total number of analyses from 5,252 to 5,364. Two
hundred and seventy cases of suspected human poisoning were investigated, and in 9 5 cases
poison was detected. The existence of poison in 46 cases of animal poisoning was proved out
of 121 cases suspected. In the case of suspected bloodstains 88 bloodstains were proved out of
109 investigated.
2. Of 401 samples of potable water examined, 150 were classed as bad. Three hundred
and twenty-four articles from Government Stores were examined. Customs and Abkari analyses
numbered 1,958 and included examinations of wood, mineral naphtha, methylated spirit,
other alcoholic liquids, opium, salt, petroleum, explosives and medicines.

1. The total number of criminal cases disposed of was 155,895 compared with 154,057 Number of offences,
lathe preceding year. Offences reported numbered 157,549. The number of cases returned as
true was 146,955 or 93*2 per cent., of which 4TS were under the Penal Code and the rest
imder special and local laws. There was a material increase in attempts at offences affect-
kg life, in rape, unnatural offences, attempts at theft and cheating and in offences under the
bantonment, Forest, Abk&ri, District Municipal and Bombay Municipal Acts, while there was
considerable decrease in cases of theft, extortion and criminal trespass, in cases under the
^inunal Procedure Code, and in cases under the Criminal Tribes, Ports, Treasure Prove,
|jty of Bombay Police and Vaccination Acts. Out of 6Q8 cases affecting human life brought
trial during the year, 230 were murders compared with 251 cut of 574 in the previous year,
fhe proportion which offences returned as true bore to the population was 1 to 14 in Bombay,
• 74, 95 and 128 in Ahmedabad, Poona and Thana respectively, while the lowest standard or
Giminality is found in Ratnagiri with one offence to 720 persons. Increases m the
ttuniber of offences are most marked in the districts of Ahmedabad, Khandesh, Suiat, Ndsik
a h<l Dhchwar; decreases are noticeable in Bombay, Karachi and feholapur.
