The new remission system was brought into force on the 1st January 1909. Under Mark system and
prisoners were released compared with 2,743 in the previous year. Remission for convict officers.

fatal. Prisons at Dhdrwar, Sukkur and the Common Prison were constantly over-crowded and
there was occasional crowding in the prisons at Yerdvda, Bijapur, Ahmedabad, Thdna, Karachi
and Rajkot and also in the House of Correction. In the Common Prison the death-rate was
424 per mille, in the Ijjouse of Correction, the Central Prison Ahmedabad, Karachi Prison,
Hyderabad and Sukkur Prisons the death-rate was over 20 joer mille. Admissions irto
hospital number 5,634 agaicst 6,044 last year and the daily average of sick was 229
against 279-8. Deaths numbered 157 against 162. Of prisoners discharged during the year
54-9 per cent, gained weight and 16-3 per cent, lost weight.

1. The total number of civil cases decided during the year under report was 305,584 K™ber and value of
against 301,515 in 1908, an increase of 4,069. Of the total number 45*3 per cent, were regular
suits, 52-7 per cent, miscellaneous cases and 2 per cent, appeals against 44 b, * ^ „
respectively in the preceding year. The number of suits instituted in all ^eurts wa ® ' >
an increase of 9,317 on last year’s figure, which also shewed an increase of 7)4/ 7. Inere was
an increase of 5,130 in the number of suits for money. Of other suits the mciease is mos
marked in mortgage suits which rose in number from 10,54/ to 12,921, by 2 per cen ., c ue

Annual administration report of the Bombay Presidency The name given to each of the three divisions of the territory of the East India Company, and later the British Raj, on the Indian subcontinent. , providing a summary record of the main events and developments in each department of the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. during the financial year 1909-10.
