In the Council Hall in the Secretariat, Bombay, seats with desks were provided for Bi ,
Excellency the Governor, the 4 Members of the Executive Council, 4o Ordinary Member
4 official reporters and 12 public reporters. Seating accommodation "'“JJ 1 so Provided foraboni’
16 members of the public. The Guest-house at Government House, Mahdbleshwar, Was ?'
progress. It contains accommodation for two guests, for each of whom are provided sitting, bed,
dressing and bath rooms.
No works of importance were carried out under this head, the total expenditure incurred
being Rs. 15,914. Of this Rs. 10,965 were spent on new works and the balance on additions
and alterations to existing works and repairs.

Buildings were commenced in connection with the Gokdk Canal Farm and those in
connection with the Northcote Cattle Breeding Farm at Charodi, Ahmedabad, were in
progress. A bungalow for the 2nd Deputy Director of Agriculture at Mirpurkhds was nearly
completed.

The foundation of the Central block for Art and Archaeology of the Prince of Wales ; s
Museum of Western India, which is the only important work in progress under this head,
was nearly completed. The difficulties encountered proved to be far greater than anticipated.
Close examination showed that it would not be safe to found an important building on the
material overlying the rock which proved to be from 17 to 33 feet below the ground level, and
averaging 111 feet below sub-soil water level. The unusually porous nature of the soil permitted
water in great volume to flow into the trenches and pits, rendering it necessary to keep 4 steam
pumps at work and progress was slow. The main walls on which the dome is to rest and the
flanking towers have been founded solidly on the rock. For the remainder of the building
stone piers about 91 feet apart have been founded on the rock and the walls are to rest on arches
turned over them. The illustration opposite shows the block as it will appear on completion.

The principal works undertaken or carried out were the following
