Indus Left Bank Division.
The canals in the Left Bank fall into two groups : O) the Eastern Ndra System
the canals taking off direct from the Indus.
and (5)
uanans — —
Under («) come the Nara River, the Jamrao, Mithrao, Heran Khipro, Thar and Hy
Canals of which the Khipro and Heran are inundation canals, tne rest being perennial. E «
the Tto, ttough classed as perennial, is closed on 1st December each year to save the count,,
round about from being water-logged.
Under (b) fall the Dad, Nasrat, Fuleli, Hasan all and a large number of smaller canals
all being really inundation canals, though the Fuleli receives a certain amount of rabi supply.
The discharge in the Kdra Supply Channel was very deficient up to end of July owing
to the ]ow state of the Biver Indus and also to the deposit oi silt in the channel. When the
river subsequently rose, the silt deposit was partially scoured out and the channel gave a fair
discharge. r lhe heavy floods of 1908 had breached both the banks of the supply channel in
miles 7 to 12 . The work of reconstructing these banks to two feet above the flood level of 1908
and strengthening them, commenced in 1908-1909, w r as completed during this year and cost
Rs. 21,302.
There are 275,500 acres of culturable land which can be irrigated direct from the River
Nara. The average area of cultivation is 58,000 acres, but in flood years it is much higher,
reaching nearly 150,000 acres in 1905-1907.
There was no flood of importance this year. The cost of maintenance was Rs. 26,887
compared with Rs. 57,746, the average of the previous 10 years.
Jdmrao Canal.
The area cultivated during the year under both kharif and rabi was about 167,400 acres
compared with 224,900 acres, the average of tbe past 10 years. A decrease of more than
30,000 acres iu tbe kharif season was due to shortage of water in the early part of the season
and was accentuated by the scarcity of labour, while tbe decrease of 20,000 acres in the rabi
season is reported to be due to tbe cultivators expecting the closure of the canal in the rabi
season in order to carry out part of the remodelling scheme, and for the same reason no
Egyptian cotton was grown. The crops grown, especially cotton, were exceptionally good,
the yield and prices being above the average.
The rainfall, though much less than in 1908, was well above the average.
No new colonists were imported from the Punjab, but 3,718 acres were given to relatives
of existing colonists, while 7,431 acres were given out as shown below
