1 . There were 157 Municipalities, with a population of 2,345,213. The net income of
these Municipalities amounted to Rs. 81,51,611 of which Rs. 19,00,738 were expended on the
improvement of water-supply, drainage and conservancy within Municipal limits.
2 . There were 25 District Local Boards and 212 Tdluka Local Boards. The Jptal income
of these Boards was Rs. 64,97,809 out of which Rs. 4,16,058 were spent on water-supply and
drainage. The charges on account of water-supply rose by Rs. 15,000 in the Central Division.
In the Northern Division If lakhs One lakh is equal to one hundred thousand rupees was spent on construction and repairs of wells and tanks.
3. The Bombay Village Sanitation Act was in force in 279 villages against 265 in the
previous year. There has been a reduction in the number of villages in which the Sanitary
Inspection Book is kept. It now stands at 2,639 and during the year under report officers
of the Sanitary Department made 419 entries.
4. "Works in progress under the supervision of the Sanitary Board comprised
water-supply at Pandharpur, Ndsik, DMrwar, Brjdpur, Hyderabad, Karachi, Ahmedabad,
Dhulia, Ratndgiri and Jacobabad; drainage schemes at Pandharpur, Karachi, Ahmedabad
and Hyderabad. The only work sanctioned but not commenced was the drainage scheme for
Kurla. Projects under investigation included water-supply for Poona City, Hubli, Sho^pur,
Igatpuri, Godhra, Sukkur, Broach and Dholka and drainage for Poona, Kalyan, Surat, Nasik,

5. Nine hundred and fifty-four vessels of all sorts with 177,870 crew and passengers were
examined against 2,427 vessels and 235,066 seamen and passengers during the preceding year.
The clothing and bedding of 102,253 seamen and passengers were disinfected. Eorty-five vessels
on which cases of infectious diseases had occurred were disinfected. Twenty-five vessels whick
had carried pilgrims to Jeddah were also disinfected. Three thousand eight hundred and thirteen
persons amongst whom cases of small-pox had occurred were vaccinated, and also 1,437 seamen
were vaccinated or re-vaccinated. Inspection divulged 5 cases of plague, 15 of cholera,
108 of small-pox and 13 cases of other infectious diseases.
6 . There were 25 vessels engaged on the outward traffic and these carried in
21,056 pilgrims against 21 vessels and 16,097 pilgrims in the preceding year. The pilgrim
were subjected to careful medical inspection and their clothing and bedding to a thorough
disinfection before they embarked. On the voyage from Bombay to Jeddah no case of
plague or cholera occurred amongst pilgrims, but 116 deaths from other causes took place-
During the year 14,330 pilgrims of the previous year's Haj arrived from Jeddah in 24 vessels.
Deaths amongst returning pilgrims numbered 279. There was 1 case of plague and 99 cases
of small-pox amohgst returning pilgrims; 3,729 pilgrims and 84 seamen submitted to vaccination
and 14 infected ships were fumigated,

Annual administration report of the Bombay Presidency The name given to each of the three divisions of the territory of the East India Company, and later the British Raj, on the Indian subcontinent. , providing a summary record of the main events and developments in each department of the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India.
