2.—Newspapers.
j ( At the end of the year there were 150 newspapers and 23 periodicals treating of General,
rrenfc political topics against 165 newspapers and 13 periodicals in the previous year. Thirty-
l ' n e newspapers and periodicals were newly started during the year but 44 publications having
leased to exist there was a net decrease of 5 publications. Out of the total of 173 newspapers
|!d periodicals 59 were published in the city of Bombay, 23 in the Northern Division, 40 in
[fu Central Division^ 19 in the Southern Division, 16 in Sind and 16 in the Native States.
Eubty of these publications were conducted dby Brahmins, of whom 28 were Chitpdvans,
L'peshasthds an ^ 39 were 0 f other sects; 46 were conducted by other Hindus; 22 by Parsis;
12 by Muhammadans and 13 by Christians. Of the 150 newspapers 52 were in Marathi, 27 in
Gujardti and 15 in English, the remainder being dispersed amongst the various other languages

2. The most noticeable increase in circulation was attained by the Sdnj Vartaman Circulation.
Lliich is stated to have had an increase of 1,800 during the year. The circulation of the Jagad-
fritt rose from 500 copies to 2,000. The Indu PraJcdsh, the Kaiser-i-Hind, the Gujardt Mitra
laLd the Satsang shew an increase of 500 each over the figures for the preceding year. No
iuciease of circulation is noticeable amongst Extremist papers and all papers which shew a
| marked decrease in circulation belong to this school. The Bhdla, the Kdl and the Tudiidri of
Baroda have all decreased in circulation to a considerable extent.
3. During the year the editor of the Kdl was prosecuted under section 124A and other Particular events.
I&ections of the Indian Penal Code and convicted and sentenced to six months’ rigorous imprison-
uent and a fine of Rs. 1,000. The editor of the Pratod was convicted under the same section
and sentenced to 18 months’rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 500. Proceedings were
1 under section 3 of Act VII of 1908 against the Hindu Punch which resulted in the
jeonfiscation of the press at which the paper was printed, and the annulment of the declaration
under Act XXV of 1867 by its printer and publisher.

1. The museum was open to the public on 805 days. The total number of visitors was The Victoria and
1^8,951 and the daily average 3,078, against 882,493 and 2,820 last year.
2. The receipts were Rs 1,300 and the expenditure Rs. 1,277. The number of visitors victoria Museum,

Annual administration report of the Bombay Presidency The name given to each of the three divisions of the territory of the East India Company, and later the British Raj, on the Indian subcontinent. , providing a summary record of the main events and developments in each department of the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. during the financial year 1909-10.

The report is divided into two parts. Part I contains a report ‘SUMMARY’ (ff 139-153). Part II (ff 154-208) is comprised of chapters I-IX.
