There were 8 appeals, and in five cases the Resident sent for the
proceedings for revision; the results are shown in
para. 192.

(e).—PRISONS.
206. There is little beyond a few figures to place on record for the district
j a jj during the decade. It has remained in practically
the same condition as in 1883. A not creditable in
stitution, as far as accommodation, appearance and security go, for a British
Settlement.
207. The wall of the Jail compound is not considered high enough, the
barracks are of the most primitive construction, thatched buildings with palings
of rough Zanzibar rafters; common sheds are placed in various positions; the
printing room is small and confined; the office is a mere closet. There are only
two small respectable buildings in the whole compound, one a pucka building
with a good ward for 2 European prisoners and a solitary cell, the other the
small hospital room.

During the last ten years there have been 2,044 male and 88
prisoners, including 50 Europeans, mostly
confined in the jail.

the prisoners is reported as remarkably good ; there
were only 213 admissions to hospital; there were 9
deaths.
213. Rs. 27,727 have been realized from jail factories, the highest
sum being in 1891-92 Rs. 3,564, the lowest Rs. 1,420

214. The annual cost has varied but little, the lowest sum Rs. 10,022,
being for 1889-90, and the highest Rs. 11,371 for
Cost ‘ last year.
215. The jail has been inspected three times by the Inspector-General of
Prisons and was visited by His Excellency the Gov-
Inspection. ernor of Bombay, Sir. J. Fergusson, in 1884 and by
Lord Harris in 1890.
