514 1,345 steamers were granted bills of health, 862 being under tbe
British flag and 486 under foreign flags. 187 bills of
Shipping. health were granted to native crafts.
515 Of the 44 pilgrim and native passenger ships, which called, 40 were
° under the British flag. All were inspected by the
Pilgrim Traffic. p ort s ur geon. 9 cases of small-pox in 6 of these
vessels were present; no other infectious disease. Only 3 vessels were unfavour
ably reported on, but the Port Surgeon remarks on the “ scandalous state of
latrines on the vessels from the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. .”
516. Quarantine was imposed against arrivals from Berbera, Bulhar and
Karam on 29th May 1892 and against arrivals from

Was withdrawn against arrivals from Massowah, Assab and Saukin on 1st
June 1892 ;
Was withdrawn against arrivals from Obokh and Jibuti on 15th June 1892 ;
Imposed against arrivals from Jibuti on 20th June 1892,
Withdrawn against arrivals from Jibuti on 3rd July 1892,
Was withdrawn against arrivals from Cape Guardafui to Suakin on 17th
August 1892 ;
Arrivals from Zaila were placed in quarantine from 21st May to 8th Sep
tember 1892.
Arrivals from Tajourra were placed in quarantine from 20th September
1892 to 22nd March 1893.
Arrivals from Aden to Bab-el-Mandeb (Aden not included) were placed in
quarantine from 30th May to 17th August 1892, but medical inspection against
arrivals from ports of the Hedjaz Yembo to Lith and from Yemen continued.
Arrivals from Yemen Coast and from Hodeidah to Lith (latter not included)
were placed in quarantine from 10th September 1892. Removed on 16th Janu
ary 1893.
